The term “flow” was first coined by American-Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-high cheek-sent-me-high) in 1990 to describe this optimal mental state.

Everyone has been in a flow state at some point: it’s when you’re so fluidly immersed in an activity that you lose your sense of self and time. Think of a skier speeding down the slopes, a student cranking out their next essay, or a hip-hop enthusiast jamming out to the latest album— that’s flow.
